Finding a farmer to process it to the taste profile that befits its legend and our quality demand has been a challenge. It took us 15 years. Presenting Tea Hong’s Iron Buddha Supreme, with that complex charcoal finish yet sweet floral aroma, stout yet lingering “rock tea” taste, delivered gently in a well-balanced infusion in a civilised way. This could very well be the only traditional style Wuyi that any connoisseur would fall in love with.

Harvested only once a year in summer and after the young leaves are bitten by a kind of tiny leafhopper, genuine Dongfang Meiren can attain its special taste profile only after following the oolong processing routine modified especially for this tea. Tea Hong’s Phong-hong tè — the original name of Oriental Beauty — is a prime selection from the origin in Hsinchu, Taiwan. A very limited batch produced in the mecca of xiao zhong gungfu black tea, Tongmuguan, this finely processed leaves of Meizhan is precious not because it is rare, but because it is so demanding to produce to this quality. It is not every year that we can achieve a gem like this.

Classic White Utility Gaiwan 150
Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking
I keep my Classic White Utility Gaiwan at work and use it every day. Today, I thought I’d lost her. The lid slipped from my hands and fell to the tile floor. It clinked and clattered but didn’t shatter. In fact, there is not a ding, crack or chip on it anywhere. I’ve heard that porcelain is very strong and this is proof. I rinsed off the lid and went about brewing another cup. Today I mixed my last bit of Snow Orchid with a little bit of Shiguping Wulong to stretch it. Maybe the lid jumped out of my hands in protest for this sacrilege. Nonetheless, I’ve been enjoying many pleasant cups out of my sturdy and useful gaiwan.

I am so glad that you said this. Every year we have to spend a lot of efforts managing our sources in order to make sure they deliver their best outputs. Phoenix oolongs are amongst the most difficult ones since they are so much in high demand and the annual yield of genuine ones is small. Furthermore, Eight Immortals is not an easy tea to process well.

A classic American TV commercial depicts three brothers at the breakfast table, pushing around a bowl to avoid eating the “healthy” cereal inside it. Finally, the youngest child takes a bite, then another. “He likes it! Hey Mikey!” his brothers exclaim.
A similar miracle happened when my ten-year-old son tried White Peony Classic Floral, a beverage that actually is good for him. This is a kid who would brush his teeth with root beer if I allowed it. Enter White Peony. OMG, he likes it! He says it’s sweet, though unbeknownst to him, it is pure with nothing added. Score another one for tea and deal another blow to the junk drink industry.
