Gu Lu Zhou (1920~2008)

Gu Lu Zhou was the only younger brother of Gu Jing Zhou, the legendary and perhaps most famous teapot artist in recent history. Yet he was by far less known than his brother. He had not complained about it though. They were always very close and he had always been low key and happy about it.

Rather than going through an apprentice route like the peers, the teenage Lu Zhou went to the Yixing technical school to learn all aspects of the crafts, from the best of the trade. That was one reason why his works have that classic, perfect feel.

Lu Zhou retired in the early 80’s and returned to teapot making by invitation in the mid 90’s. Because of the level of the brothers’ ability, they had always been allocated the best clay available. This is one critical element that I look for when searching for his works. In a world where counterfeits abound shamelessly, one cannot be too careful.

The pots with his signature seals that we have happily got hold of are of a clay from the older days; one that I have seen only in museum collections.
