Bamboo Forest Tiě Luohan:

Overshadowed by the more promoted Red Cloak, Iron Buddha ( Tiě Luohan ) is actually as taste-worthy, if not more, than any of the so-called “famous” Wuyi oolongs. It is not proven that whether it is the oldest oolong cultivar in Wuyi as they say, but it is certainly one that is not the easiest to cultivate and to produce from. Finding a farmer to process it to the taste profile that befits its legend and our quality demand has been a challenge. It took us 15 years. Presenting Tea Hong’s Iron Buddha Supreme, with that complex charcoal finish yet sweet floral aroma, stout yet lingering “rock tea” taste, delivered gently in a well-balanced infusion in a civilised way. This could very well be the only traditional style Wuyi that any connoisseur would fall in love with.

Taste profile

Nose: Warm, floral fragrance with the sweetness of osmanthus flower and accents of woody herbs and a light caramel undertone. Hints of grapes and berries. Palate: Smooth, bright body of silky tactility. Subtle yet persistent herbal wood accents on a mild oat grain sweetness tingled with the slight acidity of strawberry. Cleansing and refreshing sensation. Finish: Immediate aftertaste with a slight tint of grape peel astringency which disappears to a later, longer lasting maltiness and the lingering aroma.

Infusion tips

Tea Hong’s Iron Buddha Supreme is great when blanched and steeped for ample duration in a general teapot. It is greater when made in smaller vessels for good strength. Ideal if you have mastered gongfu infusion technique. Even better with a properly seasoned Yixing teapot.

  1. One of my favorite yan cha right now

This tea is a very nice yan cha. It has a good presence of yan yun with a good smokey high fired wuyi fragrance with woodsy tones. The infusion taste is very refreshing as an initial taste, while giving you a sweet after taste that lingers in your mouth. It makes the back of my tongue water, and has nice hui gan. I really like it.
