The sweetness in a unique bitter green

Unlike other green teas that are prized for plucking early in Spring, leaves of Da Guazi need to be quite grown and spread in order to make a fine Luan Guapian. This gives the proper biochemistry that yields enough pectin for the tea’s signature velvety texture and unique bitter character. This is possible only with a special local cultivar — Da Guazi — Big Melon Seed, hence the funny name. Some say it takes enough experience in life for a person to appreciate the bitterness in a food or drink. We think maybe it only takes a person with a truly sensitive taste faculty to understand and prize such a wonderful tea.

Taste profile

Nose: Fruity sweet aroma with distinct touches of bouquet and fresh cookies on a green, fresh, herbaceous undertone. Palate:Buttery yet sharp, bright, and very lively full body in a clear color infusion. Distinct bitterness akin to that of bitter gourd yet with a flowery note. Finish: Somehow balanced with the sweet tones of peaches over a light base of konbu. Long, tingly sweet and refreshing aftertaste. Thirst-quenching.

Infusion tips

Enjoyable in both the gongfu and conventional styles, use a higher temperature for maximum aroma and a lower for longer infusion time for a fuller body. However, it is advisable to stay between 90 to 80°C for the optimum taste profile. Experiment with more leaves and shorter infusion time to discover the fullness this tea is capable of without astringency.

  1. Delicious and refreshing. I find this tea is all about the finish and aftertaste – it’s very complex and persistent. It lasts for a while, and continues to evolve in a way that very few other green teas do.

This particular example of Luan Guapian is notably sweeter and less bitter than other versions that you might find from different vendors. It’s textured and nuanced where others are flat, thin, and lack depth of flavor.

Initially, this tea opens up with some notes of lightly roasted sunflower seeds and steamed spinach. It’s got a thick and creamy body, reminiscent of cashew butter, and as the flavor profile evolves on the palate it becomes sweeter and develops some intricate fruity and floral notes. The mouthfeel is complex and vibrant all the way through, from the initial sip to the last remaining sensations in the aftertaste.

I also enjoy the cha qi – it’s soothing and calming in the body, but apparent and focused in the mind, which makes it a good tea to drink before meditation, both in the morning and evening.

    • I find it amazing that you, as such a committed oolong drinker, could adapt to the entirely different sensory dimension of an ancient style green tea to give an account of such detailed taste experience. Amongst all our green tea selections, Luan Guapian and Bamboo Leaf are two most “untamed” style of tea. Particularly for people who grew up in a culture of teabags, tea mixes or bottled tea, as I dare to point out cultural-incorrectedly, these teas can be nakedly too real in their embodiment of the raw tea-ness ( more so even than pu’er maocha in many ways ). Yet your words describe so intricately its wonders the same of which have convinced me to include them in my repertoire. I hope more could have the same open-mindedness in the epicurean sphere of tea. Maybe it will then be a much more peaceful world.

  3. Beautiful tea

I don’t have a lot of experience with different kinds of tea, but this one is so different that I want to write about it here. It has a fullest, roundest body and silkiest texture I have ever experienced with tea. I have not expected tea to be like that before and I totally love it!
