For those who prefer finer tea tastes on top of real flower fragrance in their scented teas, Phoenix Sweet Osmanthus is an ultimate choice. Freshly picked osmanthus flower buds are sprinkled onto a thin layer of Honey Orchid Phoenix oolong in a bamboo basket over low charcoal ash fire. The same way as this has been done for centuries. The result is a natural, sweet, sensually aromatic epicurean experience few other scented teas can compare.

Deep in Wudong, the most revered area for Fenhuang Dancong production, the village of Shèmen ( sheh-mehn ) is home to one of the most elusive traditional style oolongs. Here the Shè ( 畬 ) tribe settled a thousand years ago and began producing oolong to bake it in a way that was copied in Wuyishan a few hundred years later to produce Wuyi oolongs. Tea Hong’s double baked and matured Shèmen Dancong is our best attempt to reconstruct the same tea of the peace-loving and hard-working Shè people 10 centuries ago. This old style oolong gives a clear and most eloquent definition of the tea term yan-yun — music from the rock. The term has been mostly employed to describe better Wuyi oolongs yet it has never been more beautifully defined by this Phoenix tea. If you ever wonder about the relationship of the oolongs between the two regions, this may well be the link you are looking for.

To experience why this unique Taiwan white tip oolong was nicknamed Oriental Beauty by Queen Elizabeth II, you have to taste the real thing. It is perhaps the most demanding tea to process well. Harvested only once a year in summer and after the young leaves are bitten by a kind of tiny leafhopper, genuine Dongfang Meiren can attain its special taste profile only after following the oolong processing routine modified especially for this tea. Tea Hong’s Phong-hong tè — the original name of Oriental Beauty — is a prime selection from the origin in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The fine mastery that produces Tea Hong’s Honey Orchid has to be coupled with select first flush harvests from high grown tea bushes in order to deliver the kind of quality only a restricted circle of tea aficionados have known and kept to their secret. Taste profile
Nose: Sweet fragrance of fresh osmanthus on a foundation of fresh herbs and accents of tropical fruits. Palate: Lively, sweet, malty infusion accentuated with sharp bites of tangerine peel. Light tones of berries. Finish: Sweet aftertaste. Lingering waves of osmanthus after aroma.
Infusion tips
To optimise the aromatic experience, adjust the tealeaves amount for a full taste but needing only a short steeping time. Try setting the first infusion at between one to two minutes for a two cup pot. Shorter for gongfu style quantity. The leaves can be repeatedly infused for many times.

White Peony Classic Long, traditional white tea

While White Peony from Fuding tastes more floral, that from the other earliest region, Zhenghe, tastes longer and deeper. The more tedious curing process is marked by the darker colors on the leaves. While many prize Silver Needle Supreme for its delicate taste and furry appearance, a superb traditional white tea as White Peony Classic Long delivers a more impressive taste experience. That may explain why this Mudan Wang, aka King of White Peony, is considered the best and most classical representation from the origin, and a favourite by many tea connoisseurs. As most aficionados prefer it, we have always matured this tea adequately before releasing it in the shop. The current stock is a single batch first flush ( i.e. pre-Qing-ming ) harvest from 2019.

Huangshan Maofeng Supreme, traditional green tea

Huangshan (translate: Yellow Mountain) is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and a China national conservation. Besides beautiful sceneries, it is also the origin for many a fine teas, such as Huangshan Maofeng. The tender young leaf shoot to make Tea Hong's Huangshan Maofeng Supreme is always plucked with one or two tiny immediate leaves before Spring Equinoix, and always before Qing Ming. Always from the few small family tea farms in the high mountains that we buy from. It is a rare quality even in the market in Huangshan, and if you ever found it, would be at a much higher price. Working directly with producers is a principal at Tea Hong. While offering quality at a reasonable price is one immediate benefit that you as a consumer can enjoy, there are more important reasons and not so immediate results that we aim at. Your patronage means great support for our cause.

Tieguanyin Floral, bouquet oolong

While some people like their Tieguanyin subtle and long like it used to be traditionally, some others want it to be more floral. So we give you Tieguanyin Floral, a very bouquet version of this popular oolong. The cultivar is Jin Guanyin ( aka Golden Tieguanyin ), a child between the traditional Tieguanyin plant and a relatively newer bleed, Huangjin Gui *. While the latter is widely used as a substitute for the genuine Tieguanyin for its pleasing nose, it lacks the body and length of the real thing. The resultant hybrid, however, has the best of both parents. The terroir is in Xianghua, a mountainous area in the Anxi county in the subtropical southern part of Fujian, where the best Tieguanyin is produced. This tea is also available in a small portion as a part of Tea Taster’s Box: Nine Oolong Samplers.

After having tried all of the other Fenghuang oolong in Tea Hong’s catalog, I knew I had to pick up a bag of this. I’m not a big fan of scented teas; but if this was to be anything like the other dancong in the catalog, then I knew it would be a good experience.
Gui Hua is one of my favorite cultivars, and a good unscented version is hard to find – who knows, maybe one day Tea Hong will carry one 🙂
I find that; with most scented dancong, the experience doesn’t end up being cohesive… it’s almost like the evolution of flavors moves the two ingredients in separate directions, creating a general lack of harmony in the cup. The front-end is too muted and the back-end is too thin, with a relatively weak middle that isn’t very expansive or deep. For this reason, scented dancong usually doesn’t hit the spot for me.
This, however, is totally different. The depth of flavor is excellent, with an oily mouthfeel that conveys the characteristic Fenghuang minerality quite well. It’s easily the deepest and most intricately layered version of a scented dancong I’ve come across, with a harmonized integration between the Mi Lan base material and the osmanthus flowers. It’s got excellent strength in the aftertaste, with very long-lasting notes of osmanthus and undertones of honey-soaked lychee. There are some soft bites of citrus fruits which bring some brightness to the flavor profile and a kind of clarity to the minerality.
Overall a very enjoyable experience.
