Zhou Guan Hua

Zhou Guan Hua, Yixing teapot artistThe Yixing teapot had been his family trade for generations before Zhou Guan Hua decided to take on the same path too at the young age of 16. He was luckier though. He had the privilege of apprenticing under Zhang Rong, the legendary woman artist whose work is still much sought after in the collector market. Zhou’s works have won various awards and have been published widely and covered in regional TV. Although he is more known for his ornate works, his plainer pieces are a lot more approachable and practical for daily use, and no less elegant aesthetically.

An artist seal on the handle that reads “Zhou Ji” (literally “the mark of Zhou”, which contextually means a shop run by Zhou) separates a line of less decorated works produced in this workshop as different from his other studio, “Ni Ren Zuo Fang” (Clay Man Workshop) that focuses more in decorated pieces.

About the name of this teapot: indeed it refers to the breast of a woman. In fact quite a few Yixing teapot form styles have names that do the same: Nipple, Concubine, Bosom Caldron, to name a few. Perhaps a discussion on this topic for its cultural and social connotations will be more suitable in the Tea Guardian.
