Just released: Kyoto Houjicha Powder Premium
When a client asked us to source for them a good houjicha powder two years ago, we were a little lost. I never had a good impression on this type of tea. All that I had had before were obviously from low quality by-products, roasted forcefully to attain a burnt aroma for disguise. Like those unbearable brand name coffee shop coffees, or those overpriced so called Wuyi Da Hong Pao in stylised teashops throughout major cities in China.

When we were presented with the wonderful far infrared roasted pure tea petiole houjicha by our Uji matcha producer, it completely changed our perception of what taste quality the name houjicha can carry.
So we followed up with an enquiry for the powder form. They said they do not have an option yet for such an item purely from FIR houjicha, but one blended with roasted tencha.
Perhaps for their Uji tradition of shibui — doing things with constraints and modesty, the tea is not over-roasted. This allows for the inherit taste materials to come through.

My client had a much earlier than expected sold out that year. The price has later surged as a immediate result of the matcha crisis last year, but the quality stays.
Although we stocked this current batch after the price hike, we haven’t been tempted to release immediately for regaining cashflow. Like all our other deeper roasted teas, we have rested it well to let the TCM heat energy subside amply not only for better health, but also for a more harmonious taste.
Hope you will enjoy it too.
