Our popular deep oxidation Taiwan oolong, Oriental Beauty is back. This batch was a premium harvest from last Fall and has been properly stored to mature since.

As you may have known, the unique taste profile of Oriental Beauty is partially due to the biting of the young leaves by a tiny bug called tea green leafhoppers of a particular variety specific to Taiwan. The tea plant reacts to the bite with a chain of enzymic changes to create a scent to attract a particular small spider, Evarcha albaria, the tiny hopper’s ultimate predator. This biochemical defence mechanism of the plant actually jump starts the oxidation process in this oolong production, before the leaves are picked. It gives the particular honey-floral aroma unique to this distinctive Taiwan tea.

September is the month when tea green leafhoppers are most active and thus the best season for producing Oriental Beauty. As with most deep oxidation teas, we give time to rest the tea to deliver a balance of maximum honey fruitiness in a round body with the brisk liveliness for a great morning cuppa or an afternoon boost.
