Tieguanyin price in Hong Kong,
Cold Infusing Japanese Greens,
and FedEx for Everyone

A few days ago a friend sent me the prices of a few tieguanyin varieties from an established old tea brand in Hong Kong, I have converted them into USD for your reference here:
  • top grade ( kind of equivalent to our Tieguanyin Traditional ): US$ 203.8/150g;
  • second grade ( we do not carry such second grade products, other than for export wholesale ): US$ 120/100g;
  • baked ( the same idea as our Tieguanyin Classic, except for their lesser attention to baking and maturing ): US$ 145.8/100g.
Quite astonishing, isn’t it? A few hundred percent over ours even if they were the same quality. Since I have studied their teas and that they have been paying a little bit more from their indirect source, the markup is still hair-raising. It is quite a hike from the last time I tracked their prices when I set up Tea Hong.

Yet there are still people in Hong Kong buying from them, thinking a premium quality should be that price. The sad truth is it is the result of the ridiculously high rent, high salary, yet lowering transaction frequency, and most importantly, a demanding operation profit margin they have to meet.

To look at it from a wider perspective, the big old tea brands in your home country are actually doing the same with each of all their teas, be it from Africa, India or Sri Lanka, blended, or teabagged, or “pure”. Actually the lower the quality grade, the higher markup margin. How else could they afford such grand shop building, so many staff, so much wastage?

Previously when I operated retail outlets, I tried to do it more reasonably for the benefits of the customer, but wasn’t successful. Offering true quality through the online shop of Tea Hong at reasonable and accessible price is my personal move for a good healthy change for the consumer market, for the sustainability of true tea.

Cold Infusing Japanese Greens, an Antithesis of my TCM rules

FedEx now available for everyone

I mentioned previously that we have been testing the service of FedEx against DHL in some target destinations. The results have been satisfactory, and the rates we have negotiated is more competitive than that in DHL. We are now transferring that lower rate to your benefits in your shipping options for all destinations that are open. ( Sorry Israel, let’s hope the war will be over soon. )

Cheers,
