Luan Guapian 2018
aka Melon Seed Tea
Unlike other green teas that are prized for plucking early in Spring, leaves of Da Guazi need to be quite open in order to make a fine Luan Guapian. This gives the proper biochemistry that yields enough pectin for the tea’s signature velvety texture and slightly sweet character. This unique nature is possible only with a special local cultivar — Da Guazi — Big Melon Seed, hence the funny name. If Longjing is too savoury and Taiping Houkui is too “green” for you, Lu’an Guapian is a great alternative of high quality with a different, yet pleasant and lively character.

Fruity sweet aroma with distinct touches of bouquet and fresh cookies on a green, fresh, herbaceous undertone. Buttery yet sharp, bright, and very lively full body in a clear color infusion. Sweet with notes of peaches over a light base of konbu. Slight touches of cooling bitterness that reminds of the bitter gourd. Long, sweet and refreshing aftertaste. Thirst-quenching.
Enjoyable in both the gongfu and conventional styles, use a higher temperature for maximum aroma and a lower for longer infusion time for a fuller body. However, it is advisable to stay between 90 to 80°C for the optimum taste profile. Experiment with more leaves and shorter infusion time to discover the fullness this tea is capable of without astringency.
