A humble utilitarian piece by a decorated master
Adapting an 5th century reduction fire technique, the well exhibited and awarded Sawada sensei turns a red stoneware teapot into a matte surface, humbly black teapot aptly suitable for a tea connoisseur’s daily use. At the same time, he is bringing a renaissance for the ancient craft of Su-e non-glaze ceramic (須恵器) from old Japan. Compare this with a partially glazed piece by the same artist: Kakewake Ash Glazed Oval Kyūsu to appreciate his kiln skills mastery.
This is a handmade item. Each individual piece delivered may have slight variations in colour, pattern, shape and details from the particular one used in these pictures.
