Prodigy Black Tea of Yingde
Although the ancestry of cultivar Ying Hong #9 was taken from the rugged mountains of Yunnan 60 years ago, the tea tree has acquired a very different characteristics in the much milder climate on the rolling hills of middle Guangdong. However, not all farms are able to produce a warm sweet black tea with a rich and smooth body as Tea Hong’s Ying Hong Nine. This patiently withered and oxidised selection is processed in the Guangdong style and optimally baked for its creamy characteristics and fruity accents. A prize-winning quality at great value.

Fragrance of Taiwan:
Deep in the mountains away from the tourist infested Sun Moon Lake, small tea bushes tidily populate small patches of land between tall pines, wild trees and steep slopes. A cross between Burma and a native wild tea, this Hong Yu cultivar, born right here in Yu Chi in 1999, shines with a vibrant deep green. It dominates the ambience with a smell that is both fresh and spicy. Farmers here still process black tea in small batches in the old fashioned way, though with the aid of a few new technologies for monitoring. Red Jade — the Fragrance of Taiwan — has to be so processed to that distinctive floral yet spicy aroma, minty and complex taste on a smooth body to be worthy of name. Taste profile
Nose: Floral, sweet and creamy aroma in an overtone of woody fragrance with accents of fresh and sun-dried lychee and touches of spices. Palate: Full and smooth body that is bright and velvety in the mouth. Low in astringency with a slight ting of acid. Finish: Sweet aftertaste with hints of the fruit. Lasting after-aroma.
Infusion tips
To enjoy a really full and smooth body with velvety tactility, use 2 g per 100 ml of 95°C water in a maximally 2 cup pot and infuse for 5 minutes. Decant all the liquor once time is up. To intensify the aroma, shorten the infusion time and increase the leaf to water ratio.

Huangzhi Xiang Dancong:
Song pedigree tea cultivar Huangzhi Xiang distinguishes itself from others of the same name not only by its living ancestor that has been carbon-dated back to the 13th century (late Song), but also by the elegantly complex taste and aroma of the tea it yields. That is why it is the most revered of all Phoenix oolong in its own origin and at the nearby Gongfu Tea Capital of the World — Chaozhou.

A very fragrant Jin Guanyin
While some people like their Tieguanyin subtle and long like it used to be traditionally, some others want it to be more floral. So we give you Tieguanyin Floral, a very bouquet version of this popular oolong. The cultivar is Jin Guanyin ( aka Golden Tieguanyin ), a child between the traditional Tieguanyin plant and a relatively newer bleed, Huangjin Gui *. While the latter is widely used as a substitute for the genuine Tieguanyin for its pleasing nose, it lacks the body and length of the real thing. The resultant hybrid, however, has the best of both parents. The terroir is in Xianghua, a mountainous area in the Anxi county in the subtropical southern part of Fujian, where the best Tieguanyin is produced. This tea is also available in a small portion as a part of Tea Taster’s Box: Nine Oolong Samplers.

Rare Indigenous Cultivar:
To us, offering the extremely rare Shiguping Wulong is not a challenge enough. We think we should give you the best of its kind. Trekking further deep into the mountain above the elusive main village of Shiguping, we found the patch of land which the locals called Liao-xi-ya, where it all began. The tea is softer, yet fuller and even more complex than that in the main village. The very original Shiguping Wulong*, as highly acclaimed by the man who devoted all of his life in advocating oolongs of Phoenix, the 74 years-old tea specialist Huang Bozi.

Low-key and top-shelf, this Ying Hong #9 is really quite a beautiful display of what can happen in the cross-section between genetic expression and the influence of terroir.
I love the Yunnan-forward flavor profile coupled with the really smooth and fruity finish. The way the flavors develop and express themselves make for a unique experience.
The initial burst of flavor is malty and nectar-like, with the thick and robust presence one would reasonably expect from Yunnan black tea. Within a few seconds, the maltiness evaporates and leaves behind a really clean and fruity-sweet finish. The mouthfeel is very doughy and chewy, it doesn’t feel thin but rather like a very thick marshmallow.
The finish is superb – it’s so sweet, very low in astringency, has no bitterness, and retains a creamy character along with a distinct fruitiness that most certainly the result of an excellent and deeply nourishing environment for these transplanted genetics.
