  • Jade Orchid, bouquet Phoenix oolong

One of my friends sent me a 7-gram session of this and I knew I had to buy a whole bag. This is good Yu Lan at a great price.

I particularly enjoy how Tea Hong’s Jade Orchid opens up with a fantastic minerality that carries bright and pungent florals, with hints of bananas and citrus which progressively become more apparent up until about half-way through the session, at which point some fruity undertones of mango and cantaloupe become front-and-center in the flavor profile.

In the second half of the session, the tangerine-like citrus notes melt away into something more reminiscent of apple juice, and the florals that were blooming on the front-end of the flavor profile start to mellow out into something more creamy and milky. The texture remains very silky and buttery-smooth.

The finish is graceful, it has a strong mouthfeel with a very long-lasting aftertaste that is like a mango & cream milkshake with micronized glacial rock dust, which creates a kind of electric vibrancy that I’ve come to know and love in good, high-end dancong. I appreciate the subtle nature of this Yu Lan’s depth. It has a kind of charm that slowly creeps up on you and lingers on the palate.

The empty-cup aroma is magnificent. Wet leaf aroma is super deep and complex. Leaf quality is superb… this Yu Lan is hard to beat for its price and carries all of the right attributes that I could hope to find in a premium version of this cultivar.

  • Serene Water Pearl Tea, traditional green tea

This is a lovely green tea, it has a thick mouthfeel and brothy texture with a savory flavor profile that sinks deeply into the palate. The aftertaste is sweet and smooth, with a long-lasting freshness that reminds me of something between pine needles and rosemary leaves.

I get overtones of zucchini noodles and cereal grains, along with hints of steamed snow peas & green beans, but this tea also has herbal qualities that add an extra touch of complexity and keep things interesting from cup to cup.

The leaf quality is excellent – the dry leaves are wholesome and fuzzy, and as they gradually unfurl they release those tiny little hairs, which makes the resultant soup hazy. If you catch it at the right light, you’ll see all of the little hairs floating around and shimmering like microscopic flakes of gold.

This is a good, clean, and humbly priced daily drinker, one that is easy to brew up and even easier to enjoy.

  • Sacred Lily, Wuyi yancha oolong

    A Real Treat

I would call this a mid-roast tea with a high floral aroma with sweet mineral flavours. My mouth is full of flavour, feeling, and the huigan is big! This is a big tea. Dry leaves are long. Layers of flavor and depth. A real powerhouse!

  • Eight Immortals Wudong, Phoenix dancong oolong

It is great comfort to read from a user who can so explicitly understand the rarity and value of this selection. It does take ample exposure to what’s available in the market, consistent brewing skills, as well as the talents of a sensitive palate to write this comment here. My deepest appreciation.

  • Danhu Old Bush Song Cultivar, Phoenix dancong oolong

I bought 1kg of Huang Zhi Xiang in Chau Zhou at 5000 RMB/ jin so it is more expensive tea than this Danhu tea. I did tasting comparison with friends. This tea wins without doubt. Drink it quietly. This tea transcending with most wonderful tastes and scents.

  • Shèmen Dancong Double Baked, Phoenix dancong oolong

What a concise way of describing the experience! Indeed, each tea is like a unique individual. Meeting one can be like encountering a new character, learning a different personality. For over twenty years I continue to be impressed by new ethos, unique traits. Tea is a wonderful world.
