Red Jade, Taiwan TTES#18 black tea

特級臺灣香 魚池紅玉
Fragrance of Taiwan:
Deep in the mountains away from the tourist infested Sun Moon Lake, small tea bushes tidily populate small patches of land between tall pines, wild trees and steep slopes. A cross between Burma and a native wild tea, this Hong Yu cultivar, born right here in Yu Chi in 1999, shines with a vibrant deep green. It dominates the ambience with a smell that is both fresh and spicy. Farmers here still process black tea in small batches in the old fashioned way, though with the aid of a few new technologies for monitoring. Red Jade — the Fragrance of Taiwan — has to be so processed to that distinctive floral yet spicy aroma, minty and complex taste on a smooth body to be worthy of name.

Taste profile
Nose: Deep aroma of fragrant wood accented with a distinctive, spicy yet round, minty note and hints of cinnamon, pepper, bouquet and sweet prunes. Palate: Malty, smooth body characterised with the same mint persistence that is like a blend of anise seed, rosemary, cinnamon and peppermint. Undertones of sandalwood and other aromatic woods. A forthcoming bitterness gives depth and holds the unique taste profile well as a whole. Finish: Malty, refreshing aftertaste with sweetness at the throat.
Infusion tips
You can taste some of the taste profile description when this tea is prepared using quick and short infusion techniques. However, the full profile is revealed only when steeping the leaves for a full five minutes at 95°C. Adjust the leaf to water ratio for strength, raise the temperature slightly for more intense aroma, if that is not impactful enough already. For small vessels ( below 180 ml ), the ratio is 2g to 100 ml. When using larger vessels, 1g to 100 ml or lower. Increase infusion time for strength. As always with green and black teas, maintain a one batch, one infusion policy when infusing each round for 5 minutes or more.

A magnificent example of Red Jade, this is probably one of the highest-quality representations of the cultivar that is available anywhere.
To me, this one stands out for the depth of its flavor profile. It strikes a perfect balance between seemingly-opposite flavors & sensations: the aromatics are light and fragrant, they diffuse easily in the air and you can smell the wet leaf from several feet away. In the cup, the soup is brothy and thick with oily qualities that sink deeply into the palate and create a very long-lasting aftertaste.
The whole experience is harmonized, and there is good symmetry between the aromatics in the air and the flavors in the cup.
Upon the initial rinse, the aroma of the wet leaf reminds me strongly of chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) – it’s thick, phenolic, and has a tannin-like quality that has a gentle astringency to it. Once the fruity notes dissipate, a woodsy and spicy quality comes forward to greet the palate.
From start to finish, the complex fruity and earthy notes are wrapped up in potent notes of spearmint, wintergreen, and birch leaves.
I buy this tea to share with friends & family because it will easily impress anybody, even the most discerning tea aficionados. I’ve snuck a few cups out as I have shared, and it always impresses me too.
I would highly recommend buying this tea and the Hong Yu White Tea that is also available in Tea Hong’s catalog. Brewing them up side-by-side is an excellent idea, as they are both the same cultivar, processed in different ways.
Brief (few seconds) steeps in 90 Celsius water.
Liquor is of a clear deep caramel in tone.
Taste is smooth, earthy/woody spiced sugary sweet, with a minty finish.
It has a long brown sugar sweet aftertaste that lingers in the mouth.
No tartness nor bitterness.
Medium mouthfeel, slightly dry and sticky, encouraging salivation.
If you let it cool down a bit, you’ll get a more pronounced earthy sweetness with a hint of astringency.
Wet leaves are an even dark brown in colouring and large in size, giving off a minty spiced sugar aroma.
This tea withstands many steeps.
I think this would make a great iced tea.
Again, glad you have enjoyed this tea. It is indeed one of my favourite black teas and not too many people have even heard about it. For your high sensitivity in taste, if you venture into the arena of a longer steep you will find even more wonders in this gem of Taiwan.
Smooth and minty
This is a wonderful Ruby 18. It is very smooth, with a strong minty taste. Just what I was hoping for. High quality stuff.
